ISSUE

It has been observed in the UK aftermarket that some customers have experienced fracture of the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) valves whilst attempting to check or inflate tyre pressures. This has been observed on a number of the JLR models listed above.

CAUSE

The TPMS valve stems are aluminium and sensitive to side loading. If the valve is side loaded during inflation, it may be snapped off. This loading can be more easily applied when a 'wand' style inflator is used, (see attached).

ACTION

It is recommended that during the Vehicle Handover (or at subsequent Service intervals), advice should be given to customers that damage to the TPMS valve may occur if excessive side loading is applied during tyre inflation or checking. This may be more prevalent if 'wand' style inflators are used (see attachment TPMS Tyre inflator types').

If available, the recommendation is to use a non 'wand' style inflator or the IMS compressor to maintain the pressure. This kit has a flexible style end piece.

An advisory label has also been added to certain vehicles from the following vehicle VINs:

L550 from VIN H553803

L538 from VIN H087346

The label (attached 'TPMS valve inflation label') indicates the preferred method of using inflation equipment with TPMS valves and is located on the Right Hand Side 'B' pillar for the stated vehicles (attachment 'TPMS valve label location').

It is recommended that this information is also distributed to relevant personnel wthin the dealership organisation, including technicians and customer-facing Service and Sales staff.

Should a valve stem only be snapped, it may not be necessary for dealers to replace the complete valve assembly. Later level valves consist of a two-piece design and, in these circumstances, can accommodate the replacement of the valve stem only (reference TOPIX Workshop Manual reference 204-04: Wheels and Tires or TSB LTB00542).
