CONDITION SUMMARY

Situation:  On vehicles fitted with the multi-disc Alpine Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) Digital Versatile Display (DVD) system, the discs may not play or the discs may skip when playing.

Cause:  This may be caused by contamination of the laser unit within the DVD player by dirt or dust.

NOTE: If the unit is successfully cleaned, please advise the customer of the following to help in protecting the laser from becoming contaminated again:
  • Check the condition of discs being used;
  • Review the information covered in the 'Loading a DVD/CD' section of the rear seat entertainment manual provided in the information pack supplied with the vehicle;
  • Ensure the DVD player door is closed after loading the magazine to prevent dust ingress onto the discs and laser.
NOTE: Additional information can be found in SSM39981, DVD disc condition that will inhibit playback.

Action:  In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure  outlined below to clean the laser unit within the DVD player.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE: The lens cleaner should be used to clean a maximum of 13 DVD players.
  1. Remove the DVD side trim cover.
  2. Eject the DVD cassette.
  3. Insert the head cleaner DVD into one of the cassette slots.
  4. Switch the audio system 'ON'.
  5. Select 'DVD' from the audio system home screen.
  6. After the end of track '1', select track '3'.
    • At the end of track 3, repeat two more times.
  7. Switch the audio system 'OFF'.
  8. Eject the DVD cassette.
  9. Remove the head cleaner DVD from the cassette.
  10. Load six known-good DVD discs into the cassette.
  11. Switch the audio system 'ON'.
  12. Ensure all six discs are recognized.
    • If any DVD fails to read or initialize, remove the suspect disc from the failed tray and swap with a known good disc. Repeat the disc selection process to verify that the discs are now reading correctly.
    • If a known good DVD is not read in a slot that has already failed replace the DVD drive.
    NOTE: If the disc that previously failed in a known good tray still does not play, this should be reported to the customer as a possible cause of failure.
  13. Once a successful test has been concluded, install the DVD side trim cover.
