ISSUE

A number of timing chains are being replaced when timing chain tensioners are replaced, or during a repeat repair occurring a short time after.

CAUSE

A number of timing chains have been returned from the market and inspected by engineering. When measured, the chain is found to be within specification. This means this issue is not caused by excessive stretch in the timing chain.

TOPix repair instructions for chain tensioner have been enhanced.

ACTION

When installing a new tensioner, the newer part shown in workshop manual section 303-01 Timing Chain Tensioner - Engine Set' and listed in LTB00474 must be used.

The tensioner must only be deployed as per the instruction and the animation within TOPIx to ensure it is correctly primed so the first stage ratchet mechanism can be applied.

NOTE:
  • The animation icon in TOPIx can be easy to overlook. Located adjacent to illustration E182504
  • The animation shows how to make sure the tensioner is primed if it has been previously deployed.
  • It also shows how to bring the tensioner to the first stage ratchet mechanism (considerable force may be needed at this stage).

It is important to observe the revisions made to the workshop manual information listed on TOPIx.

NOTE:
  • The service instruction listed on TOPIx is written to align specifically to the operation of the new timing chain tensioner.
  • Recent updates provide a greater level of clarity.
  • Do not assume the timing chain tensioner behaves in the same way as similar parts on other engine types.

If published TOPIx procedures do not result in a successful repair please submit an EPQR with specific details of what further action had to be taken.

If further assistance is required to make a repair, please submit a TA.
