ISSUE
Content
A number of Alternators are being replaced under warranty and are found to be faulty due to internal regulator chip damage.
CAUSE
Alternators are being damaged due to cross polarity when the vehicle is jump started.
NOTE:
Before connecting jump leads, make sure that the battery connections on the disabled vehicle are correct, and that all electrical equipment has been switched off.
ACTION
- Connect one end of the positive (Red) jump lead to the positive terminal on the donor vehicle's battery.
- Connect the other end of the positive jump lead to the positive terminal on the disabled vehicle's battery.
- Connect the negative (Black) jump lead to the recommended jump starting earth point of the donor vehicle.
- Connect the other end of the negative jump lead to a suitable earth point on the disabled vehicle. The earth point should be at least 0.5 meters (20 inches) away from the battery, and as far as possible from any fuel or brake pipes.NOTE: Check that all leads are clear of any moving components, and that all 4 connections are secure.
- Start the engine of the donor vehicle, and allow it to idle for a few minutes.
- Start the engine of the disabled vehicle.NOTE: Do not switch on any electrical circuits on the previously disabled vehicle, until after the jump leads have been removed.
- Allow both vehicles to idle for a few minutes.
- Switch off the donor vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative (Black) jump lead from the previously disabled vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative (Black) jump lead from the donor vehicle.
- Disconnect the positive (Red) jump lead from the previously disabled vehicle.
- Disconnect the positive (Red) jump lead from the donor vehicle.
